Normally this is where I’d go off about how the dialer could be more accurate and how it should make that rotary dialing sound (which it doesn’t) but what the hell, it’s free and it’s a funny joke for about 5 minutes. Break this thing out at a party and the drunks will have a good laugh or use it to convince granny that this is truly the peak of modern technology.

An app called iBluetooth is promising to open up the iPhone and iPhone 3G to Bluetooth file transfers. Not yet released, iBluetooth will apparently support file exchange between both the Apple smartphone and computers, as well as other cellphones. In their video demo, the team behind iBluetooth show an iPhone running the app sending and receiving between a Mac and a Sony Ericsson handset

The iPhone’s Bluetooth has been a regular point of complaint since the smartphone’s first launch, with Apple limiting functionality to hands-free and headset use. It’s unclear what the company’s justification for the Bluetooth crippling is, but it has prompted a number of third-party projects intending to unlock the short-range wireless connectivity. Of applications in the Bluetooth stack, the most commonly requested are A2DP wireless stereo support and file transfers.
There appears to be controversy over who is responsible for some of the code used in iBluetooth, with two separate apps promised for eventual release. Neither will be free, either, and both will likely require a Jailbroken iPhone.

Shooter for iPhone and iPod touch

happened to try iSniper Lite [iTunes link] the same week I was offered a chance to preview Shooter [iTunes link]. If you've played iSniper, you get a sense of what the basic gameplay in Shooter is like: use the accelerometer to move a sniper's scope around a board and shoot bad guys. But Shooter (from Paramount) improves upon the basic iSniper game in several important ways... and yes, it's based on the movie of the same name starring Mark Wahlberg. The game just hit the store and is currently being sold for $.99.

Whereas iSniper is like a shallow arcade game (point and shoot the baddies), there's a full story mode in Shooter that comes with several missions and great gameplay. Plus, there are medals to win, further challenging your skills. Just mastering shoot/reload/breathe is a challenge, but the basics can be grasped quite fast. I found myself having more fun with it than Saturday Night Fever: Dance [iTunes link], if only because Shooter was easier to play.

Google has recently announced the availability of Google Sync for the iPhone. Now frustrated MobileMe users can will have another option for keeping their calendar and contacts in sync between their iPhone and the cloud, and perhaps as as little icing on the cake — Google Sync is available for free. This service, which has been available for other mobile phones such as the BlackBerry for a little while now will allow users to keep their contacts and calendar in sync.

One drawback with this newly offering service though, if you are currently an Exchange user, you will not be able to set this up because the iPhone has a limit of one ActiveSync account at a time. Additionally, if you are choosing to use this, make sure you make a backup of your current calendar and contacts before you begin because it will erase your local data during the first sync. I would suggest to make a backup of both, then arrange your Google contacts and Google calendar to your liking before you begin.


Of course, while this does sound like a nice competitor to MobileMe, it may not be a good option for everyone. Personally, this would take care of my contacts and calendar, however I still take advantage of some of the other features, maybe I should consider moving those off and then look again at Google Sync, it could save me a nice $100 bucks a year.

The iPhone functions as a camera phone (including text messaging and visual voicemail), a portable media player (equivalent to an iPod), and Internet client (with email, web browsing, and local Wi-Fi connectivity). The first generation phone hardware was quad-band GSM with EDGE; the second generation also adds UMTS with HSDPA.[9]
Apple announced the iPhone on January 9, 2007.[10] The announcement was preceded by rumors and speculation that circulated for several months.[11] The iPhone was initially introduced in the United States on June 29, 2007 and has since been introduced worldwide. It was named Time magazine's "Invention of the Year" in 2007.[12] On July 11, 2008, the iPhone 3G was released. It supports faster 3G data speeds and Assisted GPS.[9]
